Background of the Study
Diplomatic communication is a specialized domain that requires precision, tact, and cultural sensitivity. In Nigeria, embassy press conferences serve as a critical platform for diplomatic exchanges, where pragmatic constructs—such as indirect speech acts, politeness strategies, and hedging—are employed to manage international relations. This study appraises the pragmatic constructs used in Nigerian diplomatic communication by focusing on press conferences held by Nigerian embassies. Such events involve carefully crafted language that balances transparency with diplomatic caution, often employing culturally specific conventions to maintain international decorum (Eze, 2023). By analyzing transcripts and video recordings of embassy press conferences, this research seeks to identify the key pragmatic devices that facilitate effective diplomatic communication. The study also examines how these constructs vary in response to different international audiences and political contexts, revealing the interplay between language, power, and diplomacy (Chinwe, 2024). The findings are expected to offer valuable insights into the strategies that underpin successful diplomatic messaging and enhance Nigeria’s global communicative competence (Afolabi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although diplomatic press conferences are central to Nigerian foreign relations, there is limited research on the pragmatic constructs employed during these events. Existing studies often focus on content analysis and political implications while neglecting the nuanced language strategies that govern diplomatic discourse (Eze, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how pragmatic devices such as politeness, hedging, and indirect speech contribute to effective diplomatic communication. Without systematic analysis, the challenges of cross-cultural interaction and message interpretation in international settings remain underexplored. This study aims to address these issues by analyzing the pragmatic aspects of Nigerian embassy press conferences, providing a clearer picture of their communicative effectiveness (Chinwe, 2024).
